அதில் எத்தனை வகை மனிதர்கள் கண்டேன்...
வியந்தேன்...
ஒன்றாக இணைய முயன்றேன்
சிறகுகள் நறுக்கி எறிந்தேன்
இதனிடையே என்னை நானே தொலைத்தேன்
வெறுத்தேன்....
துயரம் தாங்காமல் துடித்தேன்
விடியல் தேடி அலைந்தேன்
தனிமையின் சுகம் உணர்தேன்
பறந்தேன்...
சிறகில்லாமல் விழுந்தேன்
மடிந்தேன்....
This poem is indicative of all those people who are 'othered' or called 'different' or 'deviant' by the main stream society or the so called 'normal' people just because these 'others' cannot conform to the norms and the normative-normal behaviour. The tribes are othered because they behave in unique ways which aren't acceptable to the process of 'development'- they want to live in harmony with nature, they want their lands and forests but development and the power houses involved in development frcibly take away lands and forests from them, try to bring them into mainstream society where they try but fail to adjust.
Such examples of othering are aplenty.
A person from a rural area or a small town coming to a city is so enamoured by the glitz and the glamour of the city- wants to fit in.. tries her best- loses her individuality in the process- wants to go back to her old ways, her old self but fails...
